Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) invites unemployed graduates to apply for Graduate Internships / Internship Programme for 2025 / 2026.

Internship: Data Science

Location: Scientia, Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa

Closing Date: 10 February 2025

The CSIR has two Internship opportunities in the Data Intensive Research Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA) programme within the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS), which is hosted by the Next Generation Enterprises and Institution cluster. The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products under the guidance of researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams. These positions are based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities:

Under supervision, the Intern will be required to;-

  • Support DIRISA’s data-related projects by identifying user needs, collecting data, perform data analysis and interpretation and visualization of data;
  • Report insights and help users to make decisions and find improvement opportunities;
  • Support DIRISA to solve business problems through machine learning, data mining and statistical algorithms;
  • Support the software development initiatives of DIRISA for data-related projects.
  • Contribute to the DIRISA Student Datathon Challenge and DIRISA Coding School through designing data related challenges, providing training and updating training material.
  • Attend technical and on-the-job training as required;
  • Contribute to the data related body of knowledge by participating in relevant conferences, symposiums, training events, etc.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in;-
    • Data/Computer Science,
    • Computer/Electronic Engineering,
    • information Technology
    • Or related fields.
  • An Honours degree will be advantageous;
  • Previous participation in the DIRISA Student Datathon Challenge will be advantageous;
  • Certifications in Data Science will be advantageous;
  • Background in Data Science, information technology and/or software development or related fields;
  • Practical knowledge of related programming languages such as Python, scripting and the Linux operating system;
  • Knowledge and exposure in software development and web frameworks for experimentation and prototyping;

Internship: Real Time Information Management Systems

Location: Emmarentia, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Closing Date: 11 February 2025

The CSIR has an Internship opportunity for Real Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) in the Mandela Mining Precinct, which is hosted within the CSIR Business Excellence and Integration portfolio. The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products under the guidance of researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams. This opportunity is based in Johannesburg.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on Real Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) related topics related to mining environments as aligned to the programme;
  • Undertake studies on identified RTIMS techniques and technologies at various mine sites, or places of business;
  • Engage with suppliers, manufacturers, collaborator partners and research partners of RTIMS technologies at various places of business;
  • Write reports, and report on processes and results;
  • Establish Enterprise Architecture model content
  • Attend and present on results and progress where required;
  • Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leads/programme managers.

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in the field such as;-

  • Data Science/Information Science,
  • Data Management /Information Management
  • Systems Engineering / Industrial Engineering,
  • Or related discipline.

Internship: Geosciences

Location: Emmarentia, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Closing Date: 11 February 2025

The CSIR has an Internship opportunity in the Mandela Mining Precinct. Precinct aims to appoint one intern in the Geosciences area for the next eighteen months. The position is based in JohannesburgThis position reports to the Programme Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  • Literature review of previous research done locally and internationally within the field of geosciences and its applications aligned to the programme.
  • Assist and support with underground trials at various mine sites.
  • Engage with researchers and stakeholders involved within the programme projects.
  • Conduct research work/tasks related to technologies, as assigned by project leads/programme manager.
  • Report on processes and results.
  • Attend and present on results where required.
  • Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leaders.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science honours in Geology or Geophysics ;
  • Mineral Resource Management qualification will be an advantage;
  • Post graduate qualification will be an added advantage;
  • Experience within the mining environment will be an added advantage.

Internship: Textile Processing and Characterisation

Location: Scientia, Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa

Closing Date: 13 February 2025

The CSIR has two Internship opportunities in the Textile Testing and Characterisation facility, in the Advanced Polymer Composites Research Group, within the Chemicals Cluster. The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through textile testing and the characterisation of industrial samples under the guidance of experienced technologists. These positions are based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities:

Under supervision, the Intern will be required to;-

  • Conduct textile testing and routing verification tests accurately;
  • Comply with Global Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO 17025: 2017);
  • Maintain Turn Around Time (TAT) within the agreed time frame;
  • Reconcile the remaining tested samples and hard copies after testing and store them as per the client’s requirements;
  • Carry out quality assurance measures, apply work and test procedures, considering all relevant and different standards SANS, ASTM, AATCC, EU, WW, and others;
  • Ensure the lab has adequate resources to perform all aspects of the work required;
  • Ensure compliance with all corporate policy procedures in the laboratory;
  • Represents Inspectorate by appearance and conduct.  Always behaves ethically and ensures compliance in all areas.

Qualifications: A National Diploma in;-

  • Textile Technology or Quality
  • And other related fields.

Internship: Mining Engineering

Location: Emmarentia, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Closing Date: 13 February 2025

The CSIR has an internship opportunity in the Mandela Mining Precinct, which is hosted within the CSIR Business Excellence and Integration portfolio. The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products under the guidance of researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams. This opportunity is based in Johannesburg.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature review of previous research done locally and internationally in the areas mentioned above;
  • Undertake time and motion studies on identified mining engineering technologies at various mine sites
  • Engage with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on technologies related to the above areas at various mine sites
  • Write reports on processes and results;
  • Present results/research work, when required;
  • Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leads/programme

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mining
  • Post graduate qualification will be an added advantage
  • Exposure to Metalliferous mining environment and Mechanised mining environment would be an added advantage

  • A recommendation letter from your university professor or supervisor would be advantageous.
