About the Law Firm:
Established in 1990, HSG (Hornby, Smyly, Glavovic Inc.) was the first specialist environmental law company in South Africa and has extensive experience in the land-legal sector. As a firm, we work closely both with clients and built environment specialists to offer solutions that take the entire property-development process into account, enabling us to add holistic value to our clients’ projects. We also have significant experience in community facilitation, working on the ground to ensure that the social aspect of projects is handled in an effective and responsible manner.
HSG was established in 1990 by partners Peter Glavovic, David Smyly and Jeremy Ridl, with Shaun Hornby joining the firm the following year. Both Peter Glavovic and Jeremy Ridl served as professors of Environmental Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and the practice has a long history in specialising in the field. The original partners have since exited the firm, and the current leadership are made up of directors Jacques De Villiers, Odwa Dilizo, Karl Hoffmann, Fuad Davids and Tess Coetzee.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage general litigation matters and provide support to the Directors as needed
- Assist with the general administrative work, drafting and research.
- Attend court proceedings , municipal council hearings and client meetings as required,
- Assist with conveyancing matters.
- Prepare legal bills of costs and assist in the recovery thereof.
- Assist with file collections and deliveries, as well as Deeds Office, Master’s Office, and Court runs.
- Collaborate with colleagues to support the overall success of the legal team.
Qualifications:
- Admitted attorney with 1-3 years of post-admission working experience.
- Relevant experience in civil litigation, property law, environmental law, planning law, or conveyancing will be advantageous.
Skills Required:
- Excellent organisation, planning abilities and attention to detail.
- Computer literacy – proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Ability to work under pressure and to carry out specific instructions.
- Take initiative and show foresight.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to their surroundings.
- Ability to work in a team, but also to work independently when required.
